Discovering St. Andrews: The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews

 As one of the oldest and iconic courses in the world, St. Andrews Old Course is a destination most golfers would dream to include on their bucket list.  When I had the opportunity to paint No. 18 at the Old Course at St. Andrews Links, the history alone held my interest throughout the painting process.  

Just before crossing the Swilcan Bridge, you'll see two buildings in the background of the painting, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews to the left and the Hamilton Grand to the right. 

 Founded in 1754, The Royal and Ancient Golf Club is one of the oldest golf clubs in the world.  Initially called The Royal Society of St. Andrews Golfers, the club became an integral part in creating the rules of game and governing over golf tournaments at other locations.  

While it used to be called the R&A for short, that name now belongs to a separate organization that now governs the game of golf (more information on R&A can be found here).  The Royal and Ancient Golf Club is now simply a private, invitation only golf club with over 2,400 members from around the world.  The building still holds it's weight in significance with a view to match.  

If you want to play the Old Course at St. Andrews Links, you don't have to be a member of The Royal and Ancient Golf club as the course is public and maintained by St. Andrews Links Trust.
